Programme recommendations

IHME starts on Wednesday, April 5, powered by the voice of Theaster Gates and The Black Monks of Mississippi. In familiar fashion the themes of the IHME Project will be opened up for discussion on April 7–8 – this year at Gloria Cultural Arena.

IHME is inviting people to this free event to enjoy discussions, encounters, film treasures hand-picked for the Festival, Soul Food tastes that transport us to the home city of Chicago artist Gates, and the music choices of the Festival DJ.

Theaster Gates & The Black Monks of Mississippi concert
Thursday, April 6 at 19:00 at the Rock Church (Lutherinkatu 3)
The concert is fully booked, sign up for the waiting list here by Sunday, April 2

“From Theaster Gates’s intriguing works I picked The Black Monks of Missisippi’s concert at the Rock Church. Gates and his group use improvisation to ponder the nature of the sacred, which interests me even if I don’t often visit holy places. He will also take part in an extremely important discussion about cultural appropriation. In Finland this discussion is only just beginning, and it is good that it is. At stake is much more than appropriation in individual works, for example, there is the total obliteration of the languages of indigenous peoples by assimilation.”

Kaari Mattila, Secretary-General, Finnish League for Human Rights

Film series: Imagining Japan
Friday, April 7 at 21–23 at Gloria Cultural Arena, Main Hall (Pieni Roobertinkatu 12)
Films on the themes of Theaster Gates’s art, programme compiled by film critic and researcher Olaf Möller
Closing discussion between Möller and artist Edgar Honetschläger

“The Angeleno Matthew Lax’s Lil’ Tokyo Story (2016) re-interprets a key scene from Ozu’s original film (1953). I am excitedly looking forward to the other rare works from 1907-2016 in this series of short films.”

Mika Taanila, filmmaker and visual artist

Guided walks to the IHME Project
Friday, April 7 at 16:30-17:15 and Saturday, April 8 at 17:00–17:45 and 17:45–18:30
Meet in the lobby of Gloria Cultural Arena

“I  recommend the guided walks to Gates’s video installation at Finnish Salvation Army Temple. Art not only creates new environments, but also transforms the environment. On the guided walk it will be possible to gain a new view of urban space, to get to visit a splendid building and, at the same time, be able to enjoy superlative art. And all this on just a short spring walk along Helsinki’s most convivial streets.”

Aleksis Salusjärvi, critic, journalist and host of the Gloria Festival programme
