Insect-photo competition on Instagram

The sunshine, the spring and the insects are here! Have you heard the hum of a buzzy bee or seen a butterfly flutter by? Or would you like to know what species of insect has been tempted out of hiding by the warm weather?

Enter the Instagram competition organized by IHME and the Finnish Museum of Natural History, and you can win a brunch for four, tickets for the Museum, and other prizes. To enter share photos or videos of your insect on Instagram with the hashtag #IHMEötökkä!

Professor Jyrki Muona, Senior Curator at the Natural History Museum, will be happy to help you identify the insects. Professor Muona has spent close to five decades working with beetles. “This year’s annual meeting of Nordic coleopterists – people who study beetles – will be in Parikkala, Finland, in early June. So, we can also draw on the collective knowledge of this group of scientists,” he says.

What to do:

1. Share a picture or video of an insect on Instagram with the hashtag #IHMEötökkä by Thursday, 31 May. Also tag @IHMEfestival when sharing your pic or video.

2. If you need help with identifying a species, tell us. Professor and insect researcher Jyrki Muona will identify insects in the comments to competition entrants’ shared photos and videos.

3. Professor Muona will pick the competition winner. First prize is a brunch for four at Korjaamo Bar & Kitchen. On top of that, all entrants’ names will be put into a draw for tickets for Natural History Museum and for IHME-ten-years-jubilee tote bags made from recycled textiles by Globe Hope. We will contact the winner in person by June 14.
